How to Prepare for Periodontal Surgery

Posted on by admin

At Cumberland Periodontics, some of the most common types of periodontal surgery we perform on Toronto patients are periodontal flap surgery and periodontal graft surgery.

Periodontal flap surgery, or pocket reduction surgery, involves making small incisions in the gums to gain access to the roots and underlying bone. The main goal is to clean the root surfaces thoroughly, removing tartar deposits and bacteria from deep periodontal pockets that regular cleaning can’t reach. This reduces pocket depth, encouraging better oral hygiene. During the procedure, the dentist or periodontist uses scaling and root planing techniques to clean the root surfaces, removing plaque, tartar, and diseased tissue. After cleaning, the gums are repositioned and sutured back into place to facilitate healing and further reduce pocket depth.

Periodontal graft surgery includes different grafts, including soft tissue and bone grafts. It aims to restore tissue and bone structure lost due to disease. Soft tissue grafts augment gum tissue and cover exposed tooth roots, while bone grafts regenerate lost bone tissue and support the teeth. The procedure involves preparing the location, placing, and securing the graft material. Over time, the graft will integrate with the surrounding tissue. When preparing for periodontal surgery, Toronto patients should know the steps to ensure a successful procedure and recovery.

Treatment Plan Discussion

Review the proposed treatment plan with your periodontist, including the type of surgery, the expected outcome, and post-operative care instructions. Ensure you understand what to expect before, during, and after the surgery, and don’t hold back on asking questions!

Preoperative Instructions

Follow the instructions provided by your periodontist, such as fasting before your periodontal surgery if you’re going under anesthesia. If you smoke, your periodontist may recommend reducing smoking before surgery to improve the healing process.

Follow Pre-Op Diet Instructions

Your periodontist may provide specific dietary guidelines before your surgery, such as avoiding certain foods or beverages. Following these guidelines is essential to minimize the risk of complications.

Arrange Transportation

Arrange for transportation to and from one of our locations on either Danforth or Bloor Street on the day of your procedure. Driving is not recommended, especially if you receive sedation or anesthesia.

Arrange for Assistance

Depending on the extent of the surgery, consider arranging for assistance with household chores and childcare during your initial recovery period.

Prepare Recovery Space

Set up a comfortable recovery space at home. Preparing soft foods in advance, such as mashed potato, jello, and pudding, will help you set up for successful healing during the recovery period.

Follow Pre-Op Diet Instructions

If your surgeon provides specific dietary guidelines before periodontal surgery such as avoiding certain foods or beverages, you must follow them to minimize the risk of complications.

Address Anxiety or Concerns

If you’re feeling anxious or have concerns about the periodontal surgery, Toronto patients are encouraged to discuss it with their dentist beforehand for reassurance.

By following these steps and preparing for your periodontal surgery, Toronto patients can ensure a happy outcome and a smoother recovery. At Cumberland Periodontics, we ensure our patients are comfortable and prepared before their periodontal procedure. Talk to us today for more information!
